He is certain about it and they were blanket transferred to the 5th Infantry Regiment - 8th Divison later that year and went on to relieve the Big Red One in Germany. Any Light you can shed on the 61st at Fort Carson would be appreciated.

Comments about the web site: Col Swaren, Your continual enhancements to this site are superb. I feel that the dedication ceremony honoring 1/61 being held at Ft Jackson in February is a direct result of your site & portrayal of the proud heritage of 1/61. I am sorry I cannot join you and others for the weekend dedication. I also want to thank you for your recognition of the Flame Platoon, that small coterie of men who everyone else wished was not near them at any time. Thru your site I have been priveleged to find 4 members of the original flame platoon, and, develop new friendships with many other 5th Mech Vietnam Vets. Thanks again for all you have done for so many of us. Any Flamers out there please contact me. Ted Nordin, Zippo Plt Ldr 1968 HHC 1/61. Flame Breath out.

Comments about the web site: I was with Bravo Company, 1st/77 Armor, 1st/5th Mechanized Infantry from July 2, 1969 to July 2, 1970. My best buddy was Steve Barna, commo sgt. for Bravo Company. My tank crew members were Howard, Coots and another person I recall well is Franklin. I was a tank commander Oct. 3, 1969--when on a later afternoon mission--my tank hit a command detonated bomb. I was the last tank in the colum. The tank was pulled to the top of a hill and a night defensive position was set up. Elements of the 1st/11th Infantry were spaced between five tanks, one APC and one duster. At around 4 a.m. we were hit by heavy ground attack by elements of what I think were the 7th NVA Division. I recall crawling through the perimeter to our medic, Charles Bauchman, who I witnessed get hit in the abdomen by a rocket propelled grenade that hit the sprocket of the one APC. "Chip" was running to the assistance of the APC crew, who had been blown from the vehicle by a mortar than landed ontop of the vehicle. When I got to Chip, I grabbed his torso and attempted to drag him back across the small perimeter to the relative cover of the Captain's tank. Chip was dead. The crew laying under the captain's tank were my crew members. They were waiting for me to return. They were Ralph Coots and a soldier I remember as Howard. I also recall watching Captain Moore, who was a small guy, standing in the cupola just cranking on the 50 caliber. I also remember many faces--and a Staff Sgt from the 1st/11th who kept cirulating around the perimeter telling the troops to stay snake and nape and direct fire into fire zones he was plotting on a napkin. It was surreal. He kept yelling "We be having fun now!" and I recall not knowing whether to laugh or cry. I remember the ground attack turned when the Cobra gunships showed up followed by two phantom jets. I remember the sweep into the bomb craters the next morning and recall walking past a crater when someone screamed, "behind you Mad Mac!" and I whirled and shot a young NVA soldier who was standing up in the crater attempting to give up. I recall walking up to him and apologizing to him for shooting him but attempting to explain to him that he really should not have been trying to attack a night defensive position of tanks. I remember Obesitol, all the pot, the whiskey, the beer, the rain, the day the commo sgt. (not Barna) shot himself in the hand to get out of the field, the boredom, the fear, the rockets, Lt. Van Winkle, SFC Slater, the supply Sgt we called "Shaky" and a little fat guy and a guy named Abe, SSGT. Nuberger....Oh yeah, I remember big time....

Currently I have been collecting data from many sources. First I need to get a copy of "After Action Report" for operation "Dakota Clint". Secondly the KIA names listed on your Website (Commemoration) do you know what unit of the 5th they belong to. An example is Boise, Richard Howard was in D-1/11? Comments about the web site: What a surprize to find such a detailed site. I like others just didn't think anyone remembered or cared that our Unit ever was. I was with HHC 1/61 RECON Jan 70 to Dec 1970. Catman Collins, Wild Bill Bruner (From Lawton OK), Dave Santimeyer Daytripper, Gastripper, The General, Lenny Anderson (Went through AIT, Repo,Rode up on same duece and half, picked-up from Charlie 2 to Alpha 4 on one of Recons APC's, Came Back Together on the same Freedom Bird, even dropped him off at the Port Authority in NYC so he could go back to Orange NJ) Berry from Lubic Texas, 1SG Thert Big Man from Georgia with a giant nose,GOD my memory is racing I was 19 then now I'am 50. I remember an "Ambush" gone bad at the big white tree North of the brown line between A4 & C2, a Bird Dog in trouble landing on that same brown line and helping get onto A4, I have about 400 ft of movie film of A4 and some of the surrounding area and some photo's. Can't believe this site exsists, although I wound up a "Lifer" (22 years) this is my first true mental return to 1970. My deepest thought is to RECON's only loss that year SSG Kalhagan. Do not know who is responsible for this site but my sincere thanks. RECON !!!

I have some photos and the normal short stories of the unbelievable that only those who were there can really appreciate.
